Led the congregation through the COVID-19 pandemic. Created innovative worship and
pastoral care programs during this unprecedented, stressful, global pandemic context.
Enabled and facilitated congregation to receive 2.3 million dollars in state grants for
facility upgrading and social outreach programs.
Formed a partnership with the Department of Psychiatry, Yale School of Medicine, to
offer a congregationally-based substance abuse community outpatient treatment service
with members recruited from the church who were trained to offer support services to the
consumers of the program.
Established a 501 (c) (3) Dixwell Center for the Arts, Education and Social Services.
Received a Sabbatical Pastoral Grant from Louisville Institute and developed and
conducted a research project on the impact of COVID-19 upon clergy (2022).

first African American and Baptist Yale University Chaplain.

Member of research team: Theologies for Pastoral Ministry: An ATS Project Funded by
Lilly Endowment, Inc. 2024-2025. This initiative is noted as:
Theologies for Pastoral Ministry is being led by Craig Barnes, president emeritus of Princeton
Theological Seminary, on behalf of ATS, and it seeks to address the current social changes being
faced by pastors and the congregations they serve. The grant, which covers the first of the
project’s three phases, started on January 1, 2024, and will conclude by June 30, 2025. The
projected completion date is December 2028.
Under Barnes’ direction, the project will develop ten books focused on offering practical
theological wisdom for pastoral ministry today. The books will arise from a series of five in-
person gatherings of working pastors, (totaling about 60 people) representing the church’s
diversity of traditions, race, generations, genders, and socio-economic settings. The gatherings
will focus on the pressing questions of pastoral identity and mission, and participants will
develop theological affirmations about the contemporary calling of the clergy. (ATS.org).
